The Golden Bears rolled into Potsdam looking to secure their first league win of the season against the Sandstoners. Coming off of the long 11 day break between games, the boys had to shake off some rust to continue their competitiveness. The 1-1 tie wasn’t quite what they were looking for after largely dominating the game but the strong play was there for the Bears
The Bears began rolling coming out of kickoff and continued putting the pressure on for the entire half. With many scoring chances coming from players such as seniors Griffin Coakley and Colden Francey, Canton nearly put scores on the board but they just couldn’t seem to find their way into the back of the net. The Bears dominated in the defensive end as Potsdam did not record a shot on net the entire half.
The Bears came out of the half continuing to dominate the game and keep it in Potsdam’s end.
The scoring chances kept coming and the Bears finally capitalized on one when in the 68th minute, freshman Wyatt Francey sent a corner kick into the box and was put in the back of the net by senior Will Andes to make it a one goal lead.
This is where the momentum of the game seemed to flip for Potsdam. They began dominating possession and tested the Canton defense for the first time in the game. After a long time in the Bears’ end, they put a goal in with 54 seconds remaining when a free kick was directed to an open player on the side of the net who slid it to a player on the six-yard line to tap it in and force overtime.
Canton did not let this deter their play as they continued to put the pressure on in overtime. The Bears came close a few times but after the back-and-forth first and second overtime periods, time ran out and the game ended in a draw.
Canton played a solid game, with great ball movement in the offensive zone. The Bears doubled the shots of Potsdam and held momentum through the majority of the game but just couldn’t close the game out.
The boys play their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. on the turf against Massena.
