Regional Final From Troy, NY On Saturday Afternoon

The Canton Golden Bears Varsity Softball team traveled to Troy, New York on Saturday to play Chatham in the NYS Regional final. The Panthers were the number one team in the state and reigning state champions. The winner would head to Binghamton next weekend to play in the NYS Final Four. Both teams state ranked, Chatham with a 20-2 record and the Bears with a 20-1 record.
Canton being the visiting team batted first and Chatham pitcher Skyler Groom who is a DI Binghamton commit made quick work of them. Groom struck out the first three batters of the game on her way to a 2 hit, 14 strike out performance. “Groom threw the ball very well and she had total command of all her pitches today. When she mowed through our top three hitters in the first inning we knew it was going to be a challenge scoring runs.” From Co-Head Coach Mike Wentworth
Offensively the Bears could only scrape together two hits against Groom. Both hits came from sophomore Elle White. White broke up the perfect game in the fourth inning with a line shot double in the right centerfield gap and later singled in the seventh

White started the game in the circle throwing the first four innings and senior Tessa Alguire closed the game out for Canton pitching the final two frames, striking out two. The Canton duo only gave up one earned run in the loss.

“Losing is always hard but that is part of the game. The toughest thing for us as coaches though is when you realize that is the end. Saying good bye to a group of girls, parent and grandparents that have been heavily involved in the program makes for a long bus ride home. Our seniors Tess, Jenna, Shaylee, Bake, Hope and Mia have done a lot for the Canton Softball program over the last four years and they will be hard to replace. We have spent a lot of time with those girls and they will always be Golden Bears. Just want to thank everyone who supported us all year. We could not have done it without you. After a few days when the dust settles, we have to remember the most important thing; that was a fun year.” Mike Wentworth

Canton end the 2026 season with an overall record of 20-2, Class B Champions and Central League champions.
