Canton Varsity Track and Field Team Finishes Strong

As the school year comes to a close, so does the outdoor track season. The Canton track and field team recently competed in Sectionals and State Qualifiers, demonstrating the overall strength that has been gained throughout the season. Many athletes achieved new personal records and some qualified for the state meet that is to happen on June 13th and 14th.

On May 27th and 28th, the team traveled to Malone to determine the Section X Champions.

In the girls 100 meter hurdles, freshman Parker Gallagher placed second with a time of 16.80 seconds.

The boys 4×800 meter relay, consisting of Justin Towle, Carson White, Zachary Lyndaker, and Duncan Harper, placed third with a time of 9:08.

In the boys 100 meter dash, Dayshawn James placed second with a time of 11.65 seconds. Owen Matthews placed fourth, running an 11.75.

In the boys 800 meter run, William Andes placed second with a time of 2:07.

Olivia White placed fifth in the girls 200 meter dash with a time of 27.60 seconds.

In the girls 300 meter run, Lena Frank placed sixth with a time of 12:14.

In boys discus, Alden Woodruff placed sixth, throwing 105 ft. 2 in.

The Canton boys took second in the section and the girls took fifth. Combined, the team placed third.

On June 4th, State Qualifiers were held at the SLU track.

Multiple boys relays qualified to attend the state competition including the 4×100, the 4×400, and the 4×800.

The boys 4×100 broke the Canton Central school record with a time of 45.25 seconds. The team consisted of Aaron Rosales, Owen Matthews, Parker Hurlbut, and Dayshawn James.

Kailin Backus qualified individually in the girls 400 meter hurdles, placing first with a time of 1:09.

Dayshawn James not only qualified for States in both the 100 dash and 200 meter dash, but also broke the school record with times of 11.13 seconds and 22.43 seconds, respectively.

The State meet will take place in Webster, NY.
