Letter – Rico Dobbs Says Goodbye to Canton Football

Editor’s Note: The following is a letter submitted to Plaindealer Sports by Canton football Coach Rico Dobbs.

After five unforgettable seasons, I have made the difficult decision to step away as Head Football Coach of the Canton Golden Bears.

This decision was not made lightly. Coaching this program has been one of the greatest honors of my life, and it is something that I will always carry with me. Over the past five years, I have had the privilege of coaching incredible young men, working alongside dedicated coaches and staff, and representing a community that truly cares about it’s student-athletes.

To the players, thank you for your commitment, toughness, and belief in what we were building together. Watching you grow not only as athletes, but as young men, has been the most rewarding part of this journey. The memories made under the lights, in the locker room, at practices, and through every challenge and victory are memories I will cherish forever.

To the parents, families, alumni, and fans; thank you for the unwavering support and trust you placed in me and this program. High school football is special because of communities like Canton. Whether it was filling the stands on Friday nights or Saturdays, supporting our athletes behind the scenes, or simply believing in the vision of this program, your encouragement meant more than words can express. I will forever be grateful for the kindness, loyalty, and passion this community showed throughout my time here.

I also want to thank the assistant coaches, director of operations, school administration, faculty, volunteers, and everyone who helped make this program what it is. Success is never accomplished alone, and I was fortunate to be surrounded by people who cared deeply about these players and this community.

Once a Golden Bear, Always a Golden Bear.
