Canton’s track and field team hosted their third and final home meet of the season on Wednesday, May 13th. This meet also doubled as Senior night, where Canton’s graduating athletes were recognized in the yearly Senior Sprint alongside the attending teams of Madrid-Waddington and Ogdensburg. Although thunderstorms were in the forecast, the meet continued smoothly, even after a thirty minute delay following thunder.
To move the meet along quickly and avoid the storm, the boys and girls 4×800 relays were combined. Both the Canton boys and girls teams easily took first. The boys team consisted of Duncan Harper, Crosby Terrell, Carson White, and William Andes, while the girls team consisted of Lena Frank, Ashlyn Beeles, Maeve Murphy, and Aurora Casserly.
In the boys 110 meter hurdles, Tegan Cortright placed third with a time of 18.80 seconds.
In the girls 100 meter dash, Olivia White ran her race in 14.30 seconds, placing third. Melanie Ward finished in 14.40 seconds, taking fourth.
In the girls 400 meters, Hannah Ames placed first with a time of 1:10.
In the boys 200 meter dash, Dayshawn James took first with a time of 22.80 seconds.
William Andes placed second in the boys triple jump with a distance of 38 ft. 6 in.
In the girls high jump, Kailin Backus placed second, jumping 4 ft. 6 in.
On Saturday, May 16th, the Canton track and field team traveled to Ogdensburg Free Academy for the annual Van Dusen Memorial. Along with the entire Section X, Canton also competed against Peru, Lowville, Plattsburgh, Indian River, and Camden. The athletes had many strong performances and were excited to attend one of the most anticipated invitationals.
With a strong start for Canton, freshman Parker Gallagher placed third in the girls 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.32 seconds.
In the boys 100 meter dash, Dayshawn James took fourth with a time of 11.68 seconds. Owen Matthews took fifth with 11.76 seconds.
In the boys 1600 meter run, Zachary Lyndaker placed seventh with a time of 4:59. Carson White placed eighth, running a 5:01.
Aurora Casserly took fifth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:15.
In the boys 400 meter dash, Dayshawn James placed second, running the race in 51.74 seconds.
Cedric Harper ran the boys 3200 meters in 11:00 and took third place.
In the girls discus, Natasha Rossiter placed ninth, throwing 83 ft. 10 in.
In the boys shot put, Parker Hurlbut placed eighth with a throw of 36 ft. 5 in.
Canton’s varsity track and field team will travel to Salmon River on May 19th.
