On April 21st, the Canton varsity track and field team hosted their first meet of the season against Gouverneur and Tupper Lake. After a long preseason, the athletes were eager to begin competing, as was evident by many strong performances.
In the girls 100 meter hurdles, Canton’s Kailin Backus took first place with a time of 17.70 seconds. Parker Gallagher took second, running an 18.30.
In the boys 100 meter dash, Dayshawn James ran an 11.80, placing first.
Crosby Terrell placed first in the boys 400 meter dash with a time of 55.50 seconds. Duncan Harper was right behind, running the race in 56.10 seconds.
In the girls 3000 meters, Lena Frank placed first with a time of 13:02, narrowly beating her opponent by 0.10 seconds.
Ryan Faunce placed first in the boys long jump with a distance of 18 ft. 9 in.
Canton traveled to their first away meet at Franklin Academy on April 30th. Despite the cold and windy conditions, the athletes pushed through and competed well.
In the girls 100 meter dash, Melanie Ward placed fourth with a time of 14.12 seconds.
Zachary Lyndaker placed second in the boys 1600 meters with a time of 5:11.
Placing first in the boys 4×100 meter relay was Canton’s team consisting of Aaron Rosales, Tegan Cortright, Owen Matthews, and Dayshawn James. Their total time was 45.78 seconds.
Aurora Casserly placed third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:19.
In girls high jump, Kailin Backus placed first with a jump of 4 ft. 8 in.
William Andes placed first in the boys triple jump with a distance of 37 ft. 10 in.
The next meet will take place at Canton against Tupper Lake and Potsdam on May 5th.
