For the second straight season, the boys varsity hockey team wants to make a difference in the fight against Cancer. This year, the Golden Bears’ efforts will stay local.
The team has partnered with the St. Lawrence County Cancer Fund for its game on Saturday, Feb. 7 against Franklin Academy. The team will collect direct donations at the game, will offer raffles and auction off a game-worn team jersey during the contest. All proceeds from the event will benefit the St. Lawrence County Cancer Fund.
“Cancer is a disease that touches everyone in some way. We all know someone who has faced, or is currently facing, this difficult battle,” said Head Coach Anthony Levato. “Our Hockey Fights Cancer game serves several important purposes. First and foremost, it gives our players, families, and local fans a chance to pause, reflect, and show support for those who have been personally affected by cancer. It also provides an opportunity to raise funds that directly contribute to the fight against this disease.”
Levato said last year, the team raised more than $1,000 for the American Cancer Society. He is looking forward to the team helping out a local cause this year, and supporting the community.
“I encourage everyone who is able to come out on Saturday and support our team’s efforts!” he said.
St. Lawrence County Cancer Fund President Dick Christy said he also looks forward to bringing folks together in support of a common cause.
“Having sports teams be a part of our mission to help support cancer patients throughout St. Lawrence County is wonderful way for the youth in our county be a part of the greater goal to let our county residents know when it comes to cancer ‘No one fights alone,’” Christy said.
Saturday’s game will start at 1 p.m. at the Canton Recreational Pavilion. Attendees are encouraged to show up early to peruse raffle prizes.
