Canton’s varsity golf team has kicked off its season, coming out of the gates hot with a win over Potsdam before dropping its next two matches to Massena and Tupper Lake.
Wednesday, April 30 – Canton 206, Potsdam 217
Potsdam Town and Country Club played as a par-34 for the high school golfers in the season debut, as the course shortened the ninth hole was converted to a par 3. Despite Potsdam’s Ian VanWagner firing a one-over par 35, Canton was able to overcome the Sandstoners to win its first match.
Freshman Jackson Zebedee led the way for the Bears, tying a personal best with a 38 on the day. His score was followed up by Junior Daniel O’Neill, who shot 40. Junior Daniel Richardson and eighth grader Cole Lawrence each recorded a 42 on the scorecard, while sophomore Will McDonough shot 44 and junior Eliza Creurer shot 46 to round out Canton’s scoring players.

At their home course at St. Lawrence University, the Bears fell to the Lumberjacks.
Tupper Lake’s Wyatt Trudeau, an eighth grader golfing in Tupper’s No. 2 slot, fired the low round of the day with a 38. His performance was followed up by Tupper’s No. 6 man, senior Gavin Mitchell, who Canton’s Richardson with 40. Zebedee and O’Neill both shot 43 for the Bears, while Lawrence shot 45, Creurer registered a 49, and McDonough shot 50.
Canton currently sits in the middle of the Section X Golf Standings with a 1-2 record.
