The opening period saw both teams feeling each other out, focusing on defensive plays and minimizing errors. The Red Raiders’ defensive line made it challenging for Canton to penetrate the zone, while Golden Bears’ goaltender Daniel Creurer delivered key saves to keep the score level.

Six minutes through the second period, St. Francis broke the deadlock when Andrew Markel found the back of the net on a breakaway. The period concluded with the Red Raiders taking a one goal lead into intermission.

After a few words of wisdom from Head Coach Anthony Levato, Canton came out hot in the third stanza. Continuous offensive pressure paid off for the brown and gold as 11 minutes into the third period, Golden Bears’ winger Caleb Premo capitalized on an odd man rush sneaking the puck past the Raiders’ goalie to level the score at 1-1. The equalizer set the stage for a dramatic final stretch, with both teams coming close to scoring but failing to convert their chances.

Canton took the momentum into overtime with sophomore assistant captain Grady Nee setting the tone of physicality with multiple massive hits, leading by example, to fire up his team.

As the game headed into overtime, the tension in the arena rose. The Golden Bears came out aggressive, applying relentless pressure on the Raiders’ defense. Their persistence paid off when Owen Logan netted the game-winner with a precision wrist shot just two minutes into the extra period.

The goal sent the Golden Bears’ bench into a frenzy, as players stormed the ice to celebrate the hard-fought victory.

“It was a team effort,” said Canton coach Jake Newman “The boys showed a lot of heart and composure out there. We knew it was going to be a tough game, and they delivered when it mattered most.”

Canton 1, Shenendehowa 0

In an unforgettable finish on Saturday, the Canton Golden Bears defeated the Shenendehowa Plainsmen 1-0, scoring the decisive goal with just 0.1 seconds remaining on the clock. Canton and Shenendehowa came out with disciplined, defensive play, making it nearly impossible for either side to generate high-quality scoring chances. The Golden Bears’ defensive core, led by standout performances from Grady Nee, smothered the Plainsmen’s offensive pushes, while Canton goalie Gavin Schryver was a wall between the pipes.

On the other end, Shenendehowa’s defense proved equally strong. The Plainsmen’s netminder turned away several promising opportunities from Canton’s forwards, including a near-miss breakaway late in the first period that had the Canton crowd on its feet.

Heading into the final minutes of regulation, it seemed the game was destined for overtime as both teams refused to crack under pressure.

With time winding down, Canton called a timeout with 3.6 seconds remaining. They won the faceoff in the offensive zone, then quickly moved the puck to defenseman Jack Brandy at the blue line. With a desperate flick of the wrist, the puck sailed toward the net through traffic.

As the buzzer sounded, Nee jammed the puck past the Shenendehowa goalie and into the net. The puck did indeed cross the goal line with 0.1 seconds remaining.

The crowd erupted as the Golden Bears stormed the ice to celebrate their incredible last-second victory.

Canton’s win wouldn’t have been possible without the outstanding performance of their goalie, Gavin Schryver.

The win over Shenendehowa marks yet another statement victory for the Golden Bears, who continue to build momentum as the season progresses. Canton’s ability to compete under pressure and find ways to win speaks to their championship-caliber mindset.
