Bears Winter Track Teams Take Third, Fifth Place

On Dec. 13, the Canton varsity track and field team competed in their second meet of the season at St. Lawrence University’s Newell Fieldhouse. Canton’s athletes had multiple wins and achieved new records. 

In the girls 4×800 relay, Aurora Casserly, Lena Frank, Salma Moumen, and Hannah Ames took first with a time of 11:01. 

The Canton boys 4×800 relay also won, with a time of 8:47. The team consisted of Daniel Armendariz-Huang, Lucas Watts, Rylan Lee-Powell, and Aiden Rodriguez-Doyle.

Shaylee Olmstead, Aida Baker, and Sola Oakley were Canton’s top runners in the girls 60 meter dash. 

Top runners in the boys 60 meters were Tegan Cortwright and Hayden Towle.

In the girls 1500, Salma Moumen placed third with a time of 5:28. 

In the girls 60 meter hurdles, Bella Perratta placed tenth with a time of 12.01. Alexa Fay was right behind with a time of 12.18, placing 11th.

In the boys 4×200 meter relay, Canton’s team consisting of Caleb Wilknson, Dayshwan James, Lucas Watts, and Tegan Cortwright placed fourth with a time of 1:43. 

“Despite my quad injury, I still pushed through with the help of my teammates, my coaches, and some KT tape,” noted freshman Dayshawn James after his relay.  

In the boys 1600 meter run, Rylan Lee-Powell placed second with a time of 4:57.07. Aiden Rodriguez-Doyle was right behind with a time of 4:57.85. Kaden Wrthley placed fifth with a time of 5:02.12.

In the girls 600 meter run, Elena Abplanalp took third with a time of 1:52. 

In the girls 3000, Violet Foster placed fifth with a time of 13:20.

“Running in the North Country is always a wonderful experience. Everyone is positive and accepting,” Foster stated after the race.

In the girls 1000 meters, Salma Moumen placed fourth with a time of 3:36. Addison Ragan placed ninth in the race with a time of 4:02.20. Daphne Lapieere was a mere 0.3 seconds behind, placing tenth.

In the boys 1000 meters, Kolton Worthley placed eighth with a time of 3:10. 

Daniel Armendariz-Huang won the 3200 with a time of 10:34. Lucas Watts placed second with a time of 10:44.

“It’s all about how bad you want it,” said Armendariz-Huang in regard to his first place finish. 

In the girls shot put, Harper Terrell placed seventh, throwing a distance of 24 ft. 5 in.

In the boys shot put, William Moots placed eighth, throwing 31 ft. 8 in.

In girls triple jump, Hannah Ames placed fifth, jumping 27 ft. Bella Perratta placed seventh with a distance of 26 ft. 1 in. Elizabeth Mtecalf placed 11th with a jump of 22 ft. 2 in.

In boys high jump, Caleb Wilknson took second with a height of 5 ft. 4 in.

The Canton boys placed third overall with 79 points and the girls team placed fifth with 49 points.

As a whole, the Canton track and field team is happy that the season is underway. “Track is a fun learning and bonding experience. Once you get to know everyone, you become part of a big family,” noted freshman Malachi Conant. 

“We are seeing a lot of improvement throughout the season. From the top older runners to the newcomers, there have been a lot of personal records and achievements,” stated Coach Deb Lyndaker. 

The next meet will take place on Friday, December 20th.
