JV Volleyball Sweeps Chateaugay

The Canton junior varsity volleyball team served their way past Chateaugay as the Bears swept the Bulldogs 3-0 at home on Friday, Oct. 18.  The Bears nailed a remarkable 30 aces in the match, as 10 different players recorded at least one.

In the opening set, Canton was down 9-6 when MaKayla Hogan served eight straight points, including four aces, to push the Bears ahead 14-9. Canton’s lead increased to 19-10 following a pair of aces from Claire Polniak.  The Bears won the first set 25-17. In the second set, Canton held a slim 17-16 lead, but that increased to 19-17 thanks to two service points from Skye Perrin. Canton scored four straight points behind four aces from Nevaeh Halpin and went on to win set number two 25-22.  It was all Canton in the final set. Maria Franklin delivered three aces as Canton opened with an 8-3 lead. The Bears then led 11-6 and Arieana St. Andrews reeled off six straight service points, including three aces to stretch the lead to 17-6. Zizi Metcalf had two aces a short time later, and the Bears closed out the match winning 25-12.

Halpin finished with six aces and a kill.  Metcalf, Franklin and Hogan each had four aces.  Metcalf added three digs and a kill. Perrin had three aces. Polniak contributed three digs, two aces and two kills, and Delia Gaurin pounded down three kills with a dig and an assist.

The win was a good bounce back performance for the Bears after dropping a pair of matches earlier in the week.  Canton lost to Salmon River 2-1 (25-23, 24-26, 13-25) in a make up game on Tuesday and fell on the road to Clifton Fine 2-1 (22-25, 22-25, 26-24) on Wednesday.

Harlie Larson led the way against the Shamrocks with three kills, two aces and two digs. Polniak added four digs and three aces.  St. Andrews had three kills and a dig. Halpin made three digs and two aces. Hayley Hamlin had an ace and a kill. Metcalf contributed two assists, and Perrin had three digs.

Gaurin led the Bears against Clifton-Fine with four aces and two kills. Larson had two kills, two assists and a dig. Kristen Holbrook chipped in with three kills, two digs and an ace. St. Andrews added three digs, two kills, an ace, and an assist. Elle Manno had two aces, including the game-winner in the third set. Polniak had three assists, and Metcalf contributed a kill, an assist, and a dig.

The Bears have three matches remaining on their schedule. They’ll travel to Madrid-Waddington on Tuesday, Oct. 22, and then host Potsdam on Thursday, Oct. 24 and Ogdensburg Free Academy on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
