JV Volleyball Battles Massena in Tight Match

The Canton junior varsity volleyball team took on Massena Central on Thursday, Oct. 3. and the Red Raiders came away with a close 2-1 win over the Bears.

Canton fell behind in the first set 6-2, before Claire Polniak served seven straight points to put the Bears up by three.  Massena rallied and opened a 20-15 lead, but Canton’s Delia Gaurin served three straight points to close the gap to 20-18.  Massena went on to win 25-20.  In the second set, the score was tied 11-11 and Polniak served four straight points to put the Bears on top 15-11. Canton went on to win that set 25-18.  In the third, Canton was down 18-14 but rallied to tie the set with a 4-0 run.  However, Massena held off the Bears and narrowly won the final set 25-23.

Polniak had a dominating serving performance nailing 12 aces to go along with two digs and an assist.  Gaurin finished with four aces and four kills.  Lia Montanaro had three kills, three digs and an ace.  Taylor Martin made six digs.  Skye Perrin contributed four digs. Berkley Brown added two assists and two kills.  Harlie Larson chipped in with three assists, a kill and an ace, and Hayley Hamlin, MaKayla Hogan, and Arieana St. Andrews had three digs apiece.

The Bears have a busy week with three games on the docket.  Canton will play Malone at home on Monday, Oct. 7, at Chateaugay on Wednesday, Oct. 9, and then back home on Friday, Oct. 11 against Gouverneur.  All three matches will start at 5 p.m.
