Bears Fall to Undefeated Sandstoners

Potsdam racked up 247 rushing yards, including 156 yards on 19 attempts by Matthew Schwartzfigure, to remain perfect on the season with a 32-7 win over the Canton varsity football team in a Northern Athletic Conference game on Friday night in Potsdam.

Liam Miller-Lynch scored two short rushing touchdowns, and Schwartzfigure added a 3-yard touchdown, while Chase Rozler scored on a 79-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ian Van Wagner — who attempted just two passes in the game — to give Potsdam a 32-0 lead through three quarters.

Potsdam, now 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the NAC was also 4-for-4 on 2-point conversion attempts, with Rozler catching two passes from Van Wagner, Brodie Delany catching another, and Liam McCargar scoring on a run.

Aidan Richardson scored Canton’s lone touchdown, a 5-yard pass from quarterback Landon Perry, who came in for the final drive of the game. Perry also connected with Richardson for a 36-yard pass on the play immediately preceding the touchdown for the Bear’s longest play of the game. Richardson then tacked on the extra point on his first PAT attempt of the year.

“This game did not give us the result that we were looking for,” said Canton head coach Rico Dobbs. “We will move on from this loss and grow to be a better staff and execute better as a team. Each game gets more meaningful from here on out and I’m excited for the challenge.”

Quarterback Charlie Todd led the Bears on the ground and in the air, totaling 55 yards on 14 carries and connecting on 7-of-12 passes for 80 yards. He averaged 47.5 yards on two punts, including a 50-yard kick. Richardson led the Canton receiving corps with four catches for 85 yards.

John Wilcox led the defense with seven tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage. Murphy Burke and Ryan Faunce added five tackles for the Golden Bears.

Canton (2-3 overall, 2-2 NAC) returns home for back-to-back weekends, hosting Malone this Saturday, while OFA comes to town next Saturday for Homecoming Weekend. Opening kickoff for both games is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
