On Monday, Sept. 29, the Canton Boys Varsity Soccer team traveled to Salmon River marking the halfway point in the Bears regular season league games. The Bears fell to the Shamrocks 3-2 in regulation for their first league loss of the year.
The Shamrocks started hot, taking advantage of the Bears’ slow start. Within the first 30 seconds, the Shamrocks made it a 1-0 game.
As the game continued, the Bears gradually started to get their feet back under them. The Bears pressed the Salmon River defense to work hard keeping the ball out of dangerous areas. Eventually, with 31:10 left to go in the first half, the Bears tied the game up at one with a goal scored by Tomi Husinec.
The Bears kept most of the possession for the first half but Salmon River did not let many plays to get within the 18-yard line. Although the Bears kept pressure on the Shamrocks, Salmon River took back the lead after springing one of their strikers and scoring about halfway through the game.
The Bears would respond though with around 14 minutes remaining after Husenic scored his second of the game with a penalty kick. Canton and Salmon River went into the second half tied at 2-2.
The second half was similar to the first half with Canton keeping most of the possession. But, after another defensive meltdown, the Shamrocks would again take back the lead making it a 3-2 game. The Bears fought hard to keep themselves in the game but could not force one across the Shamrocks’ goal line.
On Thursday, Sept. 26, the Canton Golden Bears Boys Varsity Soccer team hosted the St. Lawrence Central Larries for a 6 p.m. non-league game under the lights. The Bears won 3-0 in regulation.
The Bears put the pressure on the Larries from the start of the game moving the ball skillfully around the St. Lawrence Central defenders. It wasn’t long before the Bears would slide one past the Larries goaltender after Will Andes placed a hard shot to the left side of the net.
The Larries would keep the Bears from scoring again until 6:08 remained in the first half. Zadok Roiger worked hard to keep the ball from going out of bounds and was rewarded to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.
The Bears didn’t stop there and Will Andes gave the Bears a 3-0 lead going into the second half. The Bears didn’t let any shots get through to the goaltender Jackson Ames for the entirety of the game. The Golden Bears kept pressure on the Larries but would not score for the remainder of the game.
The Bears improve their overall record to 6-2. They face the Gouveneur Wildcats on Wednesday in Gouveneur for a 4:30 p.m. game.
