On Friday, February 9th the Section X championship meet was hosted at the St. Lawrence indoor track, determining Section Champions and States Qualifiers. The Canton Boy’s team won the first Sectional Championship since 2002 in an impressive 12.5-point lead with only 13 team members. Massena placed second, with 78.5 points, and Norwood-Norfolk placed third with 69 points. In the girl’s team rankings, Potsdam swept the meet with 119.5 points, followed by Norwood-Norfolk with 78 points, Indian River with 77 points, and Canton just behind with 76 points.
The Canton boy’s 4×800 meter relay, comprising Kaden Worthley, Daniel Armendariz-Huang, Rylan Lee-Powell, and Aiden Rodriguez-Doyle ran to an easy first place, qualifying for states with a time of 9:09.25. Stella Shipman placed second in the 60-meter hurdles, qualifying for states in a time of 10.24. Worthley placed second in the 1600-meter run in a time of 4:54.49, and Salma Moumem placed second in the 1500-meter run in 5:28.67, qualifying for states as well. Rodriguez-Doyle placed second and claimed his second qualifier in the 3200-meter run, in 10:22.35, and Stella Shipman got her second qualifier in the 300-meter dash, placing second in 44.48. Lee-Powell and Armendariz-Huang swept the 1000-meter run, with times of 2:50.54 and 2:50.76, and Bennett Schmitt did the same with Moumen placing first and second in 11:11.76 and 11:44.08. Adam Sabatini also qualified for states, placing second in the High Jump with a jump of 5-04.00.
