Cats Nip JV Bears

In Gouverneur on Tuesday night: Gouverneur 32,  Canton 25

The Canton girls JV Basketball team traveled to Gouverneur to face the undefeated Wildcats in a battle of the top two girls JV teams in the central division.  The Wildcats nipped the Bears earlier in the season by seven and the Bears were hoping to bounce back.

The game was a defensive battle from the tip with both teams struggling to find the bottom of the bucket while playing outstanding defense.  The Wildcats picked up the breaks they needed in the end, earning the win 32-25.

“We gave it our best shot today.  I was proud of the girls’ effort.  We came in with a plan and we almost pulled off the upset.  Our defense and rebounding was outstanding.  We just struggled to score and turned the ball over a few times in key situations, which happens when you run out a young group like we have.  Jenna Larrabee, Elle White and Zayda Gaurin were so tough on the boards and they made Gouverneur earn every basket they made.”  from Coach Wentworth

Jenna Larrabee led the Bears in scoring, putting up nine points and seven rebounds.  Elle White was not far behind scoring seven points and grabbing five rebounds.  Other girls scoring were Zayda Gaurin, four points and four rebounds and Emma Bradish Hayes who had two points and three rebounds.

Canton will be back at Jerry Hourihan Gymnasium on Wednesday for an early game against Massena.  Tip off is scheduled for 4:30.
