During the shortened school week of January 15, the Canton modified girls played four games on the road. On Tuesday the girls faced two well-coached Massena teams with the seventh graders falling 12-15 and the eighth graders losing 11-35. On Thursday, the girls were back on the bus, this time to Malone, with the seventh graders securing the 28-4 win and the eighth graders falling 10-24.
Tuesday’s match-ups featured strong defensive play by both Canton teams. The seventh grade team was down 2-13 going into the second half and held the Raiders to just three points scored behind the ferocious defense of Grace “Bulldog” Dollman. The eighth graders showed similar tenacity on the defensive end, but couldn’t convert on the offensive end, including going 1 for 8 from the free throw line.
“We had some good energy tonight and stepped up our defense especially in the seventh grade game,” Coach Carla Wentworth noted after the games.
On Thursday, the young bears were back on the hardwood in Malone. Lily Abplanalp led the scoring effort for the seventh grade team putting 13 points on the board, while five different teammates combined for another 15 points. On the eighth grade side, Arieana St. Andrews led the team with eight points scored. Arieana also combined with Bella Doughty to go four for four from the free throw line.
Next up for the Mod Squad is another set of road games in Norwood on Monday before returning to their home court for Thursday’s match-ups against Massena.
