In Canton on Monday night, Dec. 18 – Canton 37, Madrid Waddington 34 (3OT)
The Canton Girls JV Basketball team hosted the Madrid-Waddington Yellow Jackets on Monday night and it turned out to be an instant classic. Madrid-Waddington is coached by former Golden Bears standout Rachel Sanderson. The homecoming game for her was able to occur because Potsdam, who is a Central Division opponent, has no JV program this year.
The game was a back and forth contest with both teams struggling to put together a good offensive run. The young Bears though made shots when they needed to, winning the game in triple overtime.
Canton eighth grader Ashley Aldous led all scorers with 12 points and made two huge free throws in the third overtime. Elle White also scored 11 points in the game and collected eight rebounds. Zayda Gaurin scored her career high, dumping in eight points. Also putting points on the board were Jenna Larrabee (four points) and Emma Bradish-Hayes (three points).
“That was a crazy game and we were lucky to get a few breaks when we needed to,” stated Coach Mike Wentworth. “Ashley Aldous hit two big three’s at the end of the first half and made two clutch free throws at the end to really keep us in it. M-W is a good team and I am sure they will be ready for us when we see them next month. The kids put everything they had into that game. I bet the girls will sleep well tonight.”
The Bears will be in action in the Sami (Sami Curtis Christmas Tournament) on December 29. The Bears will see Norwood-Norfolk in the first round.
