On Friday, Dec. 8 Section X had the first Indoor Track Meet of the season. Every team was in attendance, and the SLU Indoor Track was filled with athletes from across the North Country.
The meet kicked off with the boys 4×800 meter relay, a promising start for Canton. The team of Rylan Lee-Powell, Aiden Rodriguez-Doyle, Kaden Worthley, and Noah Gendebien, all juniors, led Canton to its first victory of the season. Canton placed first in 9:12.51, lapping every other team in the field.
Franklin Academy won the girl’s 4×800 in 10:47.98.
Gouverneur’s Vincent Thomas won the boys 60, in 7.30, and Makenna Manson from Salmon River won the girls 60-meter dash in 8.13. Gabe Peabody from Ogdensburg won for the boys in 10.02 and Canton senior Stella Shipman won the 60-meter hurdles in 10.85.
Norwood-Norfolk Senior Dominic Fiacco won the 1600-meter run in 4:53.21, and Rodriguez-Doyle placed third in 4:58.09.
Massena won the boy’s 4×200, and Gouverneur won the girl’s 4×200 in 1:43.46 and 1:57.87 respectively.
Canton swept the top two in the 1500-meter run; sophomore Bennett Schmitt placed first in 5:25.09, and junior Salma Moumen placed second in 5:25.21.
Franklin Academy won both the boys and girls 600-meter run; Dylan Keating won the boys race in 1:30.36, followed by Lee-Powell in second (1:36.36), and Adyson King ran to first in a 1:40.82 on the girl’s side.
Fiacco also won the 3200 in 10:21.28, followed by Worthley in 11:00.42 and Canton junior Lucas Watts in 11:01.82.
In the second half of the meet, Norwood-Norfolk’s Liam Miller-Lynch won the boys 300-meter dash in 38.95. Manson won the girls 300-meter dash in 44.18, followed by Shipman who placed third in 44.91.
Massena’s Andrew David won the 1000-meter run in 2:55.30, and Rodriguez-Doyle placed second in 2:57.40. Adyson King also won the girl’s 1000-meter run, in 3:21.13.
Schmitt dominated the long-distance races, winning the 3000-meter, in addition to the 1500, in 11:45.13.
Norwood-Norfolk barely beat Canton in the 4×400-meter relay, taking first in 3:57.37. The Canton team of Noah Gendebien, Truman Gendebien, Lee-Powell, and Caleb Wilkinson placed second in 4:00.50.
Potsdam’s girls 4×400 won the race in 4:35.73.
Canton had a difficult day in the field events, placing no athletes in the top three on the boys or girls team.
Darcy Funk won the girls high jump with a jump of 4-08.00, Lindy Betrus won the long jump and triple jump with jumps of 15-03.50 and 34-00.50, and Lola Buckley won the Shotput with a throw of 29-07.00.
Trystan Biller won the boy’s high jump (5-06.00), Eligha Acevedo won the boy’s long jump (17-10.00), Jordan Ashley won the Triple Jump (37-05.75), and Owen Siebels won the shotput (39-07.50).
Canton’s boys and girls teams both placed third overall in the meet with 69 and 71 points respectively.
The Potsdam Girl’s team won with 128.5 points, and the Massena boy’s team won with 93 points.
