In Lisbon Thursday night, Canton 57, Lisbon 41.
The Canton Girls Varsity basketball team opened up their season with a non-league game against the Golden Knights. This year’s Lady Bears are a young team, having only one returning senior on the roster.
The Bears took an early lead and stayed ahead the entire game. The young Bears played together and moved the ball well. Solid play on offense and defense led to a solid victory for the Bears. A lot of long three-pointers added 24 to the tally with Junior, Calie Klassen sinking five followed by Sophomore, Olivia White knocking down three. Winnie Downs, Tessa Alguire and Josie Gabriel were strong under the net adding both buckets and blocks for the Bears. Defense was led by Vivian Coburn, Sara Aldous, Olivia Francey and Haley Burnett.
“‘This is a young team with only one senior,” Coach Disalvo said after the team’s first win. “There will be some growing pains, but the team is full of energy and is focused to get better every practice and every game.”
Box Score: Klassen 17, Downs 15, White 12, Alguire 10, Gabriel 2, Coburn 1
