Canton 8, Saranac-Lake Placid 7
The Girls Varsity Lacrosse team started their best week of the season off strong with a solid win against Saranac-Lake Placid, battling out a solid, tough and gritty win. The final score of the contest ended up at 8-7 in favor of the Bears.
The Bears snuck out a close one in this contest, keeping them within a half-game of league-leading Salmon River. Freshman Olivia Francey had over 50 percent of the goals in this game for the Bears, notching five of her own to propel the Bears to a win. Ella Mousaw and Ally Kiah both dished in one goal apiece, and Vivian Coburn rounded out the scoring for the Bears in this game, netting one goal, dropping four assists and controlling five draws. Grace Davis had one of her best games yet in net for the Bears, letting up only seven goals on 16 total shots.
Canton 16, Potsdam 8
The Bears kept up the momentum from the previous game in this contest, coming hot out of the gate and never looking back, winning the contest with a final score of 16-8.
Canton really loaded up the stat sheet in this game, with six players netting goals and dominating the Sandstoners. Megan Martin had herself quite a game in this contest, netting five total points, with four goals and one assist. Vivian Coburn really was dishing out the ball in this game, with six of her 11 total points coming off of assists. Maddie Ayrassian also dropped two goals in this contest for the Bears. And Grace Davis continued her strong week in net, as Potsdam had 18 total shots on the game, with Davis saving 12.
Canton 11, Salmon River 10
Canton had possibly one of the biggest wins in their programs history on Friday night, beating Salmon River 11-10, snapping their three-year undefeated season play streak and taking over as No. 1 in the Section X Girls Lacrosse Overall Standings.
Salmon River has always been a powerhouse in Girls Varsity Lacrosse, beating up on teams with ease for the past three years. But with Canton’s right combination of skill and determination they were able to secure the win.
“I felt like we put together a whole 50 minutes as a team,” Senior Maddie Brandy remarked. “We worked extremely hard to come out strong and keep it going. Sometimes we start a bit slow but we knew if we wanted to beat Salmon, we had to come out hard on the first draw.”
This win for the Bears was a huge momentum swing in terms of the standings and confidence, Canton not only has the confidence to beat Salmon but now they know they can in the future.
Olivia Francey played this game like she was shot out of a cannon, scoring seven goals on the night for the Bears. She’s been an instrumental part of this Canton team so far this season. Vivian Coburn had an impressive game for the Bears, netting one goal, three assists and controlling nine draws. In this game she also surpassed 200 career points for the Bears, a very impressive milestone. Rounding out the goals for the Bears were as follows, Winnie Downs, Megan Martin and Sara Aldous, all netting one goal to help the Bears win.
Canton capped off a very impressive week with this win as they keep adding to their astounding resume.
