Softball Drops Opener to Hammond at Home

Canton 4  Hammond 6

The Canton Golden Bears Softball team opened up their  season on Tuesday at home against the Hammond Red Devils.

The Bears struck first on a little league homerun from Courtney Peters on a bunt single in the first inning.  The Red Devils had a big fourth inning scoring six runs on 2 hits and three errors.  The Bears picked up three more runs in the game on an RBI double from Olivia Sero and a two RBI triple from Sydnee Francis.

Hadley Alguire started the game in the circle striking out eight in 3.2 innings and only giving up one earned run.  Ava Hoy entered the game in relief and struck out 10 and didn’t give up a hit in 3.1 innings of work.

Hoy, Alguire, Tessa Alguire, Katie Metcalf, Courtney Peters and Emma Logan also had a hit for Canton.

“It was great to get outside and play an actual game today.  Hammond played well and had one big inning when we made three errors that cost us.  We pitched well enough to win but we just need to cut down on the errors and be more competitive with two strikes.  I think you will see this group improve every game,”  said Coach Mike Wentworth

The Bears won’t be in action again until they travel to Massena after spring break.
