Greenwich 60, Canton 32

After receiving a first-round bye, Canton hosted the Greenwich Witches from Section II on Saturday in the New York State Public High School playoffs where the winner punched a ticket to the Class “C” final four. Coming into the game with a 25-0 record, Greenwich was undefeated and ranked third in the state.

Canton took an early lead after a basket from Hoy and a three pointer by Coburn put the Bears up 5-2, but Greenwich responded. Greenwich used their press and fast feet to create turnovers and went on a run, outscoring Canton 11-1 throughout the rest of the first quarter. The Witches continued their dominance in the second quarter and drained four three-pointers.

“Greenwich was an outstanding team,” Head Coach Jim DiSalvo noted. “They were very quick and shot the ball very well. ”

Canton continued to struggle with the press which led to a low scoring quarter. The Bears found themselves down 29-10 at the half.

Canton came into the second half with a better press break and managed to get some points on the board. They scored 14 points in the third quarter which was four more than the entire first half. Their improved scoring wasn’t enough as Greenwich also had a successful offensive quarter. Reegan Mullen had 10 points in the third quarter and led the Witches to an 18-point quarter. The fourth quarter shared a similar story and Greenwich pulled away to win 60-32.

Box Score: Hoy 10, Coburn 7, Klassen 7, Downs 4, Gabriel 2, and Tessa Alguire 2.

Reflecting on the season, Coach Disalvo said “Overall, we had a great season. We are a young team, bringing all but two players back for next season. Our goal was to compete for a Sectional Title, and we accomplished that by winning the Class C Title. We will regroup this off season with travel ball and come back stronger and with more experience.” Canton finished 16-8 on the season and had two players selected for an all northern. Ava Hoy won co MVP and Calie Klassen was selected for second team all northern while Hadley Alguire was awarded the Sportsmanship Award.
