Girls Basketball Wins Three Divisional Matchups to Close out the Regular Season

Canton 59, Salmon River 19

Canton started the week out with a home match against Salmon River. As the regular season comes to an end every game matters and the Bears made sure they would bring this game home. Canton held Salmon River to four points in the first quarter and zero in the second quarter. The Bears played well on both sides, scoring 43 points in the first half. An impressive performance from the line was shown as Canton was a perfect 100 percent on free throws going 10/10 on the night. They continued their dominant performance in the second half and closed the game out with a final score of 59-19.

Canton 54, Massena 34

The Bears then went on a very important road game to Massena with big standing implications. Massena was one spot behind Canton in the standings and if they wanted to catch them, they needed to beat them. The game started out very evenly. The lead changed multiple times and at the end of it they were tied at nine apiece through the first quarter. But with the playoffs in mind Canton turned on the jets. Ava Hoy scored 10 in the second quarter and led the Bears to an eight-point lead at the half. Canton had their second game in a row with an impressive 100 percent performance from the line in the first half.

The Bears didn’t slow down with five different players scoring for Canton, the lead extended from 8 to 13 in the third quarter as the game slowly slipped away from Massena. Canton dominated the fourth quarter 15-6 and ran away with the game which finished 54-34.

“Our defense tightened up,” noted Coach Jim DiSalvo. And they sure did, holding Massena to single digits in every quarter of the game. Canton secured a win and a nice confidence boost heading into the playoffs.

Canton 50, Norwood-Norfolk 21

Canton’s final match of the regular season was an away match against Norwood-Norfolk. With the possibility of grabbing second place in the division Canton wasted no time. The Bears outscored Norwood-Norfolk 32-12 in the first half and had their third straight 100 percent first half free throw percentage game. Their strong defense and quick transition baskets led the Bears to a regular season closing 50-21 win.

Canton is currently tied for second place in the Division with Malone but clinched the first-place rank for the Class C playoffs.
