Lady Bears Basketball Falls to Gouverneur in a Close Match

Gouverneur 43, Canton 34

Canton faced off against the first place Gouverneur Wildcats on Thursday with big implications in the divisional standings. The Bears were only one game back of Gouverneur due to the loss to the Wildcats in their first bout. Canton started off well, with two three-pointers from sophomores Winnie Downs and Vivian Coburn which helped the Bears to a two-point lead after the first quarter.

Canton struggled in the second, only scoring five points which ended up being their weakest offensive quarter. Gouverneur gained ground and found themselves up two at the half.

The game stayed close and multiple lead changes combined with solid defensive performances by both teams saw the quarter only decided by one point. The Wildcats put up 10 to Canton’s nine which put them in the lead by three after the third quarter.

The fourth quarter started out like the others but with a couple of big three pointers, Gouverneur pulled away and managed to outscore the Bears by six in the fourth. Ava Hoy had five in the fourth contributing to her 18-point performance, but it wasn’t enough as the Bears fell 43-34.

After the game coach Disalvo was asked about his thoughts on how the Bears played.

“Both teams played with high intensity. Gouverneur played great defensively, and we struggled with our outside shooting,” he said. “We gave up a couple of untimely three-point shots in the fourth quarter which proved to be the difference in the game. Playing at Gouverneur is always a great atmosphere for a high school game. ”
