Canton Wrestlers Squeak Past Massena

The Bears wrestling team travelled to Massena on Jan. 11 for a matchup with a lot of importance in the divisional standings. Throughout the match there were several forfeits. Seven matches were decided by forfeit and just five had two contenders. Of the seven forfeits, Canton won three and Massena took four.

The first match was at 126 pounds between Ezra Williams of Canton and Corey Jarret of Massena which ended in a pin at 1:04. Because of the advantage Massena gained over forfeits, Williams’ pin was a big pickup for the Bears.

The second match was between Canton’s Nick Locy and Donovan Turner. This match went the distance and was a very hard-fought battle that ended up 13-10 in favor of Massena’s Donovan Turner.

Graham Rozler was back in action after suffering an injury at a statewide tournament and came back strong. He managed to pin Massena’s Nolan Jensen at 1:47.

Canton was feeling good, and a pin would secure a win and that’s just what Jack Joyce did in a dominating performance which led him to a victory by pin at 1:01.

There was one match left in which Michael Cogdill fell to Massena’s Darrien Pestomerlo-Coates by pin.

Canton won 36-33 over Massena and managed to keep themselves only one point back of the first place Gouverneur Wildcats.
