Indian River 63, Canton 44

The Canton Girls Varsity Basketball hosted Indian River for a non-league game on Jan. 4 and started out strong. Ava Hoy put up eight in the first quarter and looked unstoppable. The Bears went up 15-12 after the first quarter and were feeling good but Indian River came out hot in the second quarter with a 9-0 run.

Canton struggled with their full court press and after falling behind 21-15, called a timeout. They came out of the timeout more controlled and managed to get the lead down to one at the half. Canton spread their points in the second quarter with five different players scoring.

The Bears rebounded from the Indian River loss with a dominating performance against Salmon River on Jan. 6. Canton tallied up a final score of 81-21 which had them feeling good going into their next matchup against the league leading Gouverneur Wildcats.

Ava Hoy led the team with 25 points followed up by Olivia White with 18 and Winnie Downs with 14.

“We played well, we worked on a few different defensive sets and continue to mature as a young team,” Coach Disalvo noted.

Canton faces off against Gouverneur on Thursday in a big divisional matchup. Canton’s only league loss this season was to Gouverneur, and they look to avenge that loss in their next matchup.
