In Canton on Dec. 14: Canton 34, Heuvelton 33

The Canton Girls JV Basketball team has enjoyed a very successful week on the hardwood. On Monday, Dec. 12 they defeated the Malone Huskies, Tuesday evening saw them win against a very talented Gouverneur Wildcat team and Wednesday the young Bears enjoyed a nail biter which ended in a one point victory over the Heuvelton Bulldogs. Needless to say, all of those cats and dogs have been no match for the Bears!
In last evening’s game, the Dogs jumped out on top and held the lead until the seven second mark in the fourth quarter when Tessa Alguire made two clutch free throws to put the Bears on top for good. The Bears were actually down by nine with two minutes left but Sara Aldous and Kaitlyn Redfern hit some key shots in the last minute to put the Cubs back in the game.

Aldous led all scorers with nine, followed by Haley Burnett with eight and Alguire with seven points.
“Sometimes good team have to win ugly and that was us today. The Dogs totally outplayed us for three and a half quarters but the girls pulled it together with about two min left to get the ‘W,'” said Coach Mike Wentworth. “Tessa made two huge free throws and Sara and Kaitlyn hit some clutch buckets down the stretch. The unsung hero though may have been Jenna Larrabee and her 10 rebounds. She is a machine on the boards.”
