Girls Varsity Hockey dominates in season opener

The Golden Bears started out their season campaign on a good note winning their opening game against Sara-Placid. The contest was lopsided, with a final score of 10 goals to zero in favor of the Golden Bears. This win marks the first win of the Bears’ season.

Canton dominated from all aspects of the game, winning the contest 10 goals to zero in utter dominance. Behind a solid effort from multiple players and the team as a whole, the Bears were able to secure the win. The stat sheet for the Bears was filled up in this game. Starting goaltender M. Bullock was like a wall in the net, with 10 saves and a shutout for the Bears. Also, eighth grader Adrianna Lesperance scored her first career varsity goal in the Bears’ win. Head Coach Anita Francis was pleased with her team’s win, but not with how they handled themselves with such a lead.

“We need to try to build the girl’s high school programs and encourage high schools in NYS to implement programs, not discourage them,” Francis said.

Girl’s Varsity Hockey has taken some hits over the years when it comes to cuts, with multiple staple programs becoming nonexistent due to a lack of players.

Other notable stats for the game are as follows, Sydnee Francis with three goals and two assists, Callie Tebo with two goals and two assists, Taylor Stoll with two goals, and finally Maddy Southwick and Ava Murphy with two goals and one assist each.
