Canton 3, Massena 2

Canton rallied to cap off a come-from-behind win against Massena on Oct. 11 at Canton High School with a vocal and integral crowd in attendance. The Bears came back from a two set deficit, rallying to win three straight and go home with the win, three sets to two.

Canton came out of the gates slowly, losing both the first and second set 25-21 and 25-22 to the Raiders. But they came shooting out of a cannon the next three sets, winning the third 25-21, the fourth 25-21 and the fifth and final set 15-13. Canton trailed 13-10 in the fifth set.

Ava Hoy came in when it really mattered in the clutch and served five straight points for the win. This kind of come-from-behind win shows the determination a team like this has and how willing they are to win. Canton had multiple players with standout performances, including Hoy with 15 kills, eight points and five aces. Katie Metcalf with 13 points, six kills and four digs, and finally Olivia Sero with seven points and six digs.

The Bears capped off an unblemished week with a win against Gouverneur on Sept. 13 at the Houli Dome. Canton won the match three sets to one. Behind solid efforts from everyone on the team the Bears were able to come out with a win.

Canton started out hot, winning the first set 25-4, and based off of what we saw in the first set it looked like a surefire cakewalk for the Bears and that they would cruise to 10-2 no problem. But Gouverneur battled back in the second set winning it 25-23 and evening the match, making it one set to one. But then the Bears’ depth and grit kicked in as they won both the third and fourth sets, 25-12 and 25-13 respectively.

It was an all around team effort for the Bears as they had four players racking up five or more points on the stat sheet. As well as Katie Metcalf and Ava Hoy racking up 11 and nine kills, respectively. With this win the Beard jump to 10-2 on the season as they have two big games coming up next week.
