The Canton modified volleyball teams were both in action this past week.
The Brown team took on the Clifton-Fine Eagles at Edwards-Knox Central School on Sept. 14, and after dropping the first two sets 12-25 and 20-25, the Bears rallied to win the final set in commanding fashion 25-11. Elle Manno had an impressive day serving finishing with 12 aces. Claire Polniak dished out three assists and notched one kill and one ace. Taylor Martin added three assists and one ace. Arianne Grimshaw recorded three aces, and Adrianna Lesperance finished with two assists and one ace. “The girls got in their heads the first two sets,” said Canton Head Coach Tara Woods. “They were able to communicate and bring it together and win the last set. The Gold team brought a lot of support from the bench. Coach Smith and I were glad we had them today.”
The Gold squad hit the road on Sept. 20 to face the Ogdensburg Blue Devils, and lost three sets in a very competitive match, 14-25, 18-25, and 26-28. Nevaeh Halpin scored seven straight aces in the first set to pace the Bears. Makayla Hogan and Amal Moumen each had three aces. Kristen Holbrook chipped in with two aces and one assist, and Zizi Metcalf distributed three assists and had one ace. “The girls served very well today,” said Coach Woods. “As a team, we need to work on not getting in our heads when we make a mistake and lifting each other up. We continue to grow as a team and show support for each other.”
The Brown team returns to the court on Thursday, Sept. 22 with a road match at Brushton-Moira. The Gold team is next in action on Wednesday, Sept. 28 when they travel to take on the Malone Huskies.
