For the first time in over 10 years, Section X saw a female qualify for the NYSPHSAA Championships when 8th grader Eliza Creurer made the 95 stroke cut by scoring a solid 90. The daughter of Troy and Suzanne Creurer, Eliza will travel to McGregor Links Country Club in Wilton New York this Saturday to compete with the best girls in New York State.
Eliza becomes the first Canton athlete to meet the achievement in over four decades. Longtime golf coach at Madrid-Waddington Central School and accomplished local golfer Aaron Jones, who has a great pulse on the local golf community stated, “the last time Canton Central saw a girl qualify for states was probably Mary Lawrence when she won the boys tournament title or possibly Andrea Dutcher or Kathy Lawrence. That was likely in the 1970’s.” (If anyone has anything different than this, please pass information along to Canton Athletic Director Bill Porter at C.C.S.)
Regardless of the history, the future is bright for this young player. Her teammate Ryan Jones commented, ” Eliza has improved a lot! She has a great swing! I think its incredible that she broke 50 from the white tees being so young”. The entire community joins together to wish Eliza the very best this weekend and with her future with golf!
Go Bear!
Below is the recognition of meeting the qualifying standard by Section Chairperson Mr. Bill Gotsch at St. Lawrence University this past Saturday.
