The Canton Varsity golf team has quietly put together an unblemished record this season finishing the regular season at 11-0. The team also claimed the Section X Championship match by edging Potsdam 418 to 430 on a rain soaked weekend at St. Lawrence University Golf Course. The team was able to qualify five boys to the medal round and three individuals were able to advance to the NYSPHSAA Championships this weekend. The boys who qualified for states include Sam Sieminski, Ryan Jones and John O’Neill. The other boys who competed in the medal round included Cayden Cady and Tyler Zebedee.
Coach Rob Brown was very appreciative of his team following the afternoon. “I just love these kids”, mentioned Brown. They are not only great golfers, they are great people. They deserve this!” Brown was equally excited about the future with his young team. He was even more happy that 8th grader Eliza Creurer qualified for the girls state championships. “It was just an all around great day for our team”, remarked the veteran Coach Brown.
When asked about his most memorable moment of the season, Junior leader Sam Sieminski noted, “the greatest moment was when all three of us (Sieminski, Jones and O’Neill) qualified for states. I knew we had a good chance because we have all been playing pretty well. That was definitely the highlight for me.” Sieminski also wanted to thank Coach Rob Brown for another great season by saying, “Just a big thanks to Mr. Brown for all the DQ runs after big wins!”
Ryan Jones indicated that he will remember repeating as title winners. Jones stated, ” One thing for sure about this season is winning the Section X Championship for the second straight year as a team. He mentioned that much of their success was based on the teams’ approach. “Our team was trying to shoot below a certain score in every match, which lead to some great team wins”, stated the sophomore Jones.
As the threesome heads to states Junior, John O’Neill indicated; ” We expects a lot of great competition at the course in Elmira. I hope we can go there and have a good time and put up some good scores.”
Regardless of the outcome this weekend, the three as well as the remaining members of the team have been instrumental at putting Canton golf on the map. With most of the roster returning, the future is certainly bright!
