Varsity Girls Lacrosse currently sits tied for first place in the League at 8-0. The Lady Bears open up this week by traveling down Route 11 to Potsdam for a 4:30 p.m. matchup on Monday to turn around and head to Massena for an 8 p.m. game under the lights on Tuesday. The Lady Bears previously defeated Potsdam and Massena by scores of 12-6 and 9-5, respectively.
“Playing Potsdam and Massena are both always fun because of the huge rivalries between the schools,” said Head Coach Murphy Newman. “While our lacrosse rivalry is relatively newer, the school rivalry is not – most of our girls play other sports against these same girls and it just increases the intensity of the games.”
Thursday, the Bears will host the only other undefeated team, Salmon River – defending Section X Champions and responsible for the only league losses the Bears had last year – before traveling to Salmon on Monday, May 16t.
“Due to the rough start of the season with the rain, we somehow have both our Salmon games towards the end. The girls have been working hard throughout the season and we’ve adjusted things as needed- should be a great matchup,” Newman stated.
The team, welcoming a nice group of newcomers, has proved to have a very balanced attack with a solid defensive unit.
“We’ve had some injuries to account and adjust for, forcing us to look at things differently. We’ve popped people in different positions to see where they will best fit to support the team- it’s been nice that the girls are willing to try most positions – even goalie though we have to stop that,” laughs Newman.
