In Canton at the Ike Noble Field Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon:
Canton 6 Heuvelton 5 (8 Innings)
Canton 3 Heuvelton 2 (6 Innings)
The Canton Girls Varsity Softball team opened up the season on Tuesday by sweeping a double header from the visiting Heuvelton Bulldogs. The Bears donned their brown uniforms for the home opener but look forward to wearing their new white jerseys on the road. The away uniforms pay tribute to longtime Canton Golden Bears Softball Coach Wayne Willette. In true symbolic spirit, the two letter “W”s marked on the sleeve were followed by two opening wins for the defending Central Division Champion Bears!
In Game one the Bears won 6-5 in eight innings. Hadley Alguire picked up the win pitching all eight innings, striking out 7 in the game. Cate DeCoteau led the Bears offensive attack going 3-4 with two triples and a homerun over the centerfield fence. Sophomores Katie Metcalf and Lucy DeCoteau also picked up three and two hits in the game.

In Game two the Bears won 3-2 with Ava Hoy picking up the win, striking out 13 batters and only allowing two hits. Offensively Lucy DeCoteau went 3-3 and drove in all three runs for the Bears. Katie Metcalf stroked a double in the winning cause.

“Two great games today! Win or lose, that was fun Softball. We have some work to do both offensively and defensively but we will get better every day”. The DeCoteau sisters had great days and our pitching was solid tonight.” “Heuvelton has a very good program and it is always a good game when we play”, stated head Coach Mike Wentworth.
Canton will be back in action on Wednesday at Ike Noble field as they will host the powerful St. Lawrence Central Larries. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30.
