Canton girls volleyball faced a tough opponent in Gloversville, NY last weekend. Canton and Fonda were evenly matched but ultimately Fonda ended Canton’s unbeaten streak with a 3-1 win to take the regional title.
The Golden Bears fought hard but could not gain the momentum needed to turn things around after losing the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-23. They won the third set 25-21 and then Fulton took the fourth, 25-15.
The Bears had some strong performances for the final game of their year. For some it was the last game of their high school careers.
Seniors supplied many of the points for the game. Hitter Katie Bennett had 18 kills, 2 blocks, 1 dig, an assist, 2 aces and 7 serving points. Mattigan Porter had 36 assists, 3 kills, 3 digs and 10 serving points. Hitter Riley Taylor had 5 assists, 2 digs and supplied 4 points. DS Alyssa Jacob had a dig and 8 points. Libero Jade Stevenson contributed 5 digs, an assist and 5 points.
Sophomore hitter Ava Hoy had 22 kills, 2 aces, 3 blocks and a dig. Hoy will be a dominant force for the next two years of her varisty stint with the Golden Bears.

With strong performances in their few appearances in the playoffs, JV players Katie Metcalf and Josie Gabriel will surely help fill the hole left by the talented seniors who are set to graduate in the spring.
Though the Bears could did not come home with the regional title, they have a season to be proud of. It’s the first time Canton has advanced to the regional final, and they ended their year with a 22-1 record. This achievement places them among the best teams in Golden Bear Volleyball history.
The last undefeated team played in1995 and is pictured below. The 95′ team is honored in the William Hayden Athletics Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to Canton Volleyball on a year to remember and good luck to seniors Katie Bennett, Mattigan Porter, Riley Taylor, Jade Stevenson, Alyssa Jacob, Makayla Douglas and Julianna Richardson!!
