Girls Varsity Soccer Starts Season with Impressive Win Over Malone

On the second Tuesday of September, the Lady Bears took on the Malone Huskies in their home opener.  The Lady Bears were eager to win after a tough battle with Chateaugay in their first scrimmage.  It felt good to be back on their home field with the support of the Canton community. The energy from the spectators was immediate and lasted throughout the contest.

The adrenaline rush started early on, with all the players going hard to the ball with hopes of putting one in. After a determined first 35 minutes defender Gab Schuckers put in a beautiful ball off a corner kick which hit off a Malone defender. Congratulations to Gab Shuckers on her first Varsity goal!

The Bears entered halftime with a 1-0 lead over the Huskies, but they knew the job wasn’t done yet.

After halftime both teams came out with high intensity. The Huskies were desperate to score but goalkeeper Bree Rogers wouldn’t let that happen. Seniors Maddie Hoy, Amelia Rodee and Quinn Woodward were a dynamic trio in the middle with their east to west play that led to Sophomore Emily Estabrooks putting the ball away off a perfectly placed pass from Bryce Butterfield right over the goal keeper’s head. Senior Anna Woodruff had several close scoring opportunities as a result of her spirited play. The Bears did not let up the rest of their game, out shooting the Huskies 14-3 ending in a 2-0 win over the Malone Huskies.

The result also unfortunately led to Laurie Kiah being two batches behind on ceremonial shut out cookies.

The Lady Bears are back in action Thursday September 9 at Massena.
