The No. 2 Lady Bears Varsity lacrosse team hosted No. 3 Massena in the Section X semifinals on Monday, defeating the Raiders by a score of 11-6. The Lady Bears earned a first round playoff bye due to their second place regular season finish.
Massena qualified for the semi final game after eliminating No. 6 Plattsburgh on Saturday, 13-3 in the quarterfinals. With the losses, Plattsburgh finished the season 4-11 overall with Massena finishing a 11-5 overall.
The Lady Bears started strong, scoring the games first five goals before exchanging goals with the Raiders to go into halftime with a 7-4 lead.
The second half saw the Bears maintaining their lead with the Raiders continuing to fight. The teams would exchange goals before Canton pulled away toward the latter portion of the game. Canton had multiple scorers in Vivian Coburn (1g, 5a), Etta Coburn (3g, 2a) and Hannah Reed (3g), Camryn Sipher (2g), Haley Stephenson (1g, 1a) and Lindsey Filiatrault adding a goal. Junior Sarah Rodee recorded 14 saves in the victory. For Massena, scorers included Lashomb, Halladay, Thompson and Hopps.
“Give credit to Massena. They clearly came to play and didn’t go down without a fight- they kept it interesting for sure,” Stated head coach Murphy Newman. “We’re proud of how hard we’ve worked to have earned the first round bye and host the semifinal game in front of our fans.”
Bears advance to the Section X Championship game on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Massena High School. Canton awaits the winner of the Potsdam and Salmon River game which will be played Tuesday in Salmon River.
