Malone 8, Canton 7

The Canton Golden Bears Varsity baseball team suffered a disappointing defeat to the Malone Huskies on Sunday afternoon. At game time the temperature was around 90 degrees, and the game heated up to match the weather.

The Bears gave up 3 in the first inning on 2 singles and a walk, and another in the second after a RBI by Malone’s leadoff batter scored Brock Spaulding. Down 4-0, the Bears were fearing the game may be a long one after leaving 5 runners on base in the first 2 innings. Sam Roiger started the Bears offense after hitting a bomb double to left field. Scotty Ahlfeld doubled to score Roiger. Colby Young hit a single to score Ahlfeld. But the Bears closed out the inning with 3 strikeouts, stranding 2 runners yet again. The Bears went to work again the next inning with 2 outs, where Roiger, Ahlfeld, Young, and David Zuhlsdorf all scored runs and Ahlfeld and Luke Wentworth had RBI’s. Both teams scored a run the next inning, with the Bears coming from Gavin Thompson on a hit by Tanner Hazelton. The Huskies scored 3 in the bottom of the 7th to win the game.

Zuhlsdorf went 6 innings, giving up 5 earned runs, 6 hits, 3 walks, and striking out 5. Roiger pitched the 7th, giving up 3 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 1.
