The Canton girls varsity basketball team beat Massena on Monday night 52-50. This was a Central Division win for the Golden Bears, who remain undefeated in league play.

Canton struggled with match-ups throughout the game due to their prolonged trouble with injury. Four members of the team, Hannah Reed, Emily Wentworth, Lexi Huiatt, and Kelsea Whittier, were unable to compete for various reasons on Monday. Despite this, the girls did their best to fill the roles of the missing pieces.

The game got off to a slow start and Canton struggled to rebound and play under the basket. Trading basket-for-basket throughout the first half, the Bears could not capitalize on many opportunities. At the half, the game was tied at 26. Canton was unhappy with their sloppy performance and hoped to clean up the game in the latter quarters. The big girls were stronger under the net and battled for rebounds. The guards started to knock down shots and push the ball up the floor. Overall the team was able to connect on passes and get to the rim more efficiently in the second half. Defensively Canton was not satisfied with allowing an opponent to put up 50 points and hope to improve their defensive sets in upcoming games.

For the golden bears, Sarah Sieminski scored 20 points, Katie Chisholm scored 14, and Maddie Hoy scored seven. Esther Shipman and Mary Lobdell scored five and four, while Gretchen Warner added one basket.

The Golden Bears are back on the hardwood on Wednesday in St. Lawrence Central. The tip off is at 7 p.m. Go Bears!
