In a rematch of Tuesday night’s game, Canton’s varsity volleyball team beat Gouverneur. 25-8, 25-12, 25-17 were the scores of the three set win. This was also Senior night for the Bears, the team celebrated all nine of their seniors. The game was a chance for the seniors to showcase their skills, and they did just that.
The team successfully served consistently and kept the ball in play on out-of-rotation plays. All seniors were able to hit, serve, pass, set and dig the Wildcats’ scrappy play.
Hitters Sydney Lorenc and Gretchen Warner had six and five kills. Mattigan Porter and Jillian DiSalvo each added three kills and Kelsea Whittier assisted to 17 points. Abby Metcalf, Abby Todd, Warner, and Whittier all served over five straight points.
This match finishes the regular season for Canton. The team will be seeded second in the West Division for class C, with a record of 10-4. The Bears will face the Wildcats again next Tuesday at home at 5 p.m. The team invites all sports fans to attend this playoff match in Full Halloween costumes. Prizes will be awarded for “Best Costume,” “Scariest Costume,” and more. Please come watch some fun volleyball, and celebrate Halloween. Go Bears!
The nine seniors are highlighted below with a short description of each of them:
Jillian DiSalvo, daughter of Jim and Amy DiSalvo, has played volleyball for 6 years; 2 on varsity. She was voted Victory Promotions MVP of the week in 2018 and named Academic All Northern. Jilly has been consistently named to the Honor and High Honor Roll at Canton and she also plays basketball and runs outdoor track and field. Jilly is hoping to attend SUNY Geneseo to study childhood education. Jilly’s favorite volleyball memories include team dinners and team bonding events.
Tiffany Durham, represented by her Aunt and Uncle, Melinda and Andrew Conant, has played volleyball for 6 years; 2 on varsity. Tiffany is a member of the FFA and GSA. She also participates on the indoor track and softball teams. After graduation, Tiffany plans to join the Marines or go into law enforcement. Her favorite volleyball memory is winning the Section X Championship.
Grace Franklin, co-captain, daughter of Jim and Sarah Franklin, sister of Maria and Andrew, has played volleyball for 6 years; 3 on varsity. Grace received the Section X Sportsmanship Award in 2018 and was named the Super Server. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Thespian Troupe 259, and St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club. She serves as GSA Treasurer, Middle School Musical Director, and has participated in all High School Musicals and Plays. Grace plans to take a gap year before entering college to study forensic psychology or theater. Grace’s favorite volleyball memories include discovering that she has the power to serve 15 consecutive points and winning the Section X Championship.
Sydney Lorenc, co-captain, daughter of Jason and Susan Lorenc, has played volleyball for 5 years; 4 on varsity. Sydney was named 2nd Team All Northern in 2017, and 1st Team All Northern, 5th Team All State in 2018, and Academic All Northern. Sydney is a member of the National Honor Society and runs indoor and outdoor track. Next year Sydney plans to attend college to study architecture. Sydney’s favorite volleyball memories include all of the team dinners and bondings we had at each other’s houses.
Rorie Newman, daughter of John and Kelli Newman, sister of Wyatt, has played volleyball for 6 years; 2 on varsity. Rorie was awarded Most Improved Player at St. Lawrence Volleyball Camp. Rorie is Class President, member of the National Honor Society, Model UN, GSA, indoor and outdoor track teams and Whiz Quiz. She attended the NYS Young Writer’s Institute and is a current AP Scholar. Rorie plans to go to college next year where she will major in creative writing. Rorie’s favorite memories include warming up with Megan, watching Bella get her first back row hit in a game, and showing up late to practice.
Gabbie Rauth, daughter of Robert Rauth, has played volleyball for 5 years; 5 on varsity. She is a member of the Junior National Honor Society, and has participated in outdoor track and cheerleading. Gabbie plans to attend SUNY Cortland next year where she will study sports medicine. Gabbie’s favorite volleyball memory is winning the Section X Championship.
Abby Todd, daughter of Nathan and Sarah Todd, sister of Lincoln, Caroline and Andrew, has played volleyball for 6 years; 2 on varsity. Abby is a member of the Environmental Club, Model UN, GSA, and works at Dana Dining Hall. Abby plans to attend college and study environmental engineering. Abby’s favorite volleyball memory is Katie Bennett serving up a storm.
Gretchen Warner, daughter of Dave and Janet Warner, has played volleyball for 6 years; 2 on varsity. Gretchen was named 2nd Team All Northern and Academic All Northern for volleyball. She was nominated for Victory Promotions MVP of the week and received The Hammer Award. She is Secretary of the National Honor Society, member of Student Council and plays basketball and runs track. Gretchen plans to attend Hobart and William Smith College and major in the sciences. Gretchen’s favorite volleyball memory is “Goodnight baby girl.”
Kelsea Whittier, co-captain, daughter of Andy and Kristen Whittier, sister of Laurel, has played volleyball for 6 years; 4 on varsity. Kelsea has set over 900 assists during her career and was named 1st Team All Northern in 2018. She has received the Super Setter Award, the Golden Bear Award and is a two-time Academic All Northern. Kelsea is Vice President of National Honor Society, an AP Scholar, a member of the basketball and lacrosse teams and volleyball team treasurer. Kelsea plans to attend St. Lawrence University next year and study mathematics. Kelsea’s favorite volleyball memories are winning the Section X Championship and team brunches.
