Letter – Superintendent Joe McDonough Thanks Canton Community, Congratulates Hockey Team

Editor’s Note: The following is a letter submitted to Plaindealer Sports by Canton Central School Superintendent Joe McDonough.

Dear Canton Community,

This past weekend our Canton Boys Varsity Hockey Team completed an incredible run to the New York State Championship game. While the final result was not what the team had hoped for, what this group accomplished is something they and our entire community should be incredibly proud of.

The perseverance, grit, and determination these players showed throughout the tournament reflected the very best of Canton.

At its best, athletic competition gives us a way to explore the limits of our capacity. It shows us what can happen when individuals commit themselves fully to something larger than themselves. Over the past few weeks, our team demonstrated exactly that.

But just as powerful as what happened on the ice was what happened around it.

This run reminded us what makes the Canton community so remarkable.

We saw it in the generosity of those who quickly stepped forward to help support the team.

We saw it in the members of our fire, rescue, and police departments who gave their time to send the team off and welcome them home in style, and in the bus drivers who safely carried so many Canton fans to Buffalo and back.

We saw it in the storefronts across town displaying messages of support and in local businesses hosting watch parties so neighbors could gather together.

And we saw it in the sea of Canton fans who made the long drive to Buffalo.

Students. Families. Alumni proudly wearing their old varsity jackets. Community members and teachers who simply wanted to be there and play their part.

The thrill of the victories, and the pain of falling just short of the ultimate goal, will stay with these players for a long time. What they accomplished, and the way they represented Canton along the way, is something they should always be proud of.

But moments like this do something more than produce wins and losses.

They remind us of something we already know in our hearts: Canton is a special place. We are a community that shows up for one another. We celebrate together. We support each other through both triumph and disappointment.

That spirit is what truly defines us.

For the seniors on this team, this run will forever be part of your story. Thank you for the leadership and example you set for the younger players who will carry this program forward.

To our players and coaches, thank you for representing Canton with such pride and character. And to our entire community, thank you for reminding us once again what we are capable of when we come together.

That is the very best of Canton.

Go Bears.

Joe McDonough
Superintendent
