On Friday, December 11th, the Canton varsity track and field team competed in the first indoor meet of the season at SLU’s Newell Fieldhouse. Despite many talented track and field athletes graduating last June, this year’s relatively young team is showing immense potential that is expected to grow throughout the season.
In the girls 600 meter run, freshman Lucy Rose placed fifth with a time of 1:57. Junior Hannah Ames finished less than a second behind, placing sixth.
In the girls 1000 meter dash, Elena Abplanalp placed sixth, running the race in 3:34. Freshman Nicole Sabatini placed seventh with a time of 3:50.
In the girls 3000, Lena Frank placed fifth with a time of 13:08.
In the girls 4×800, Canton’s team, consisting of Elena Abplanalp, Lena Frank, Lucy Rose, and Hannah Ames, placed first with a time of 10:45.
Demonstrating the potential of Canton’s younger athletes, freshman Parker Gallagher placed first in the girls long jump, jumping 15 ft. 10 in.
In the girls weight throw, Harper Terrell set a new school record, throwing 17 ft. 8 in.
In the boys 60 meter dash, Dayshawn James placed third with a time of 7.64 seconds.
In the boys 600 meter run, Zachary Lyndaker placed sixth with a time of 1:37.
In the boys 300 meter dash, Dayshawn James placed third with a time of 38.47.
The boys 4×400 team placed third with a time of 4:01. The team consisted of Crosby Terrell, Finn O’Brien, Justin Towle, and Duncan Harper.
Despite having a smaller and less experienced team this year, especially on the boys side, the athletes are exhibiting consistency and a solid work ethic.
This was evident in the second meet of the season, which took place on December 19th. As a result of wintery weather, Salmon River, Malone, Tupper Lake, and Indian River were not in attendance. Additionally, although many Canton athletes were sick, the team still competed well.
In the girls 60 meter dash, Shaylee Olmstead placed ninth with a time of 9.06 seconds.
Lena Frank placed sixth in the girls 1500 with a time of 5:53.
In the girls 60 meter hurdles, Isabella Perretta placed fifth with a time of 12.06.
Placing third in high jump was Hadley Green, jumping a height of 4 ft. 6 in.
In the boys 1600 meter run, Zachary Lyndaker placed fourth with a time of 4:54.
Tegan Cortwright placed seventh in the boys 60 meter hurdles, running the race in 10.99 seconds.
Canton’s boys 4×400 team placed second with a total time of 3:57. The team consisted of Justin Towle, Tegan Corthwright, Dayshawn James, and Zachary Lyndaker.
The team will continue to practice over the holiday break and looks forward to the first meet of the new year to be held at SLU on January 9th.
