POTSDAM — The Canton Bears Modified Football team capped a dominant season with a 20–0 shutout victory over Potsdam on the road, finishing the year 7–0 in league play.
Canton wasted no time setting the tone. On just the second play from scrimmage, quarterback Ryder Peets connected with Gavin Brown on a 20-yard strike, with Brown showing excellent focus to haul in a tipped pass. Teagan Green followed with runs of 11 and 9 yards before Hayden Krepel sprinted 26 yards on a pitch to give the Bears a 6–0 lead.
After a celebration penalty gave Potsdam good field position near midfield, the Bears’ defense quickly responded. Lukas Reynolds made two big tackles, including one for a loss, before Gavin Brown intercepted a pass up the right hash marks to regain possession. Canton was unable to move the ball on its next series and was forced to punt.
The Bears’ defense continued to dominate as Troy Zuhlsdorf, Krepel, and Landyn Clifford each delivered key tackles, forcing a Potsdam three-and-out. On offense, Avi Jacobs and Max TeRiele each broke off solid runs for first downs, but pre-snap penalties stalled the drive.
Before halftime, the defense again rose to the occasion. Jacobs, Zuhlsdorf, and Kullen Buchardt all made standout tackles in the backfield, keeping the Sandstoners scoreless through two quarters.
Potsdam opened the second half with the ball, but Laden Nolan set the tone with a tackle for loss. The Sandstoners managed a first down, yet the Canton defense featuring Zayden Martin, Connor Hicks, and Charles Foster tightened once more.
On fourth-and-one at the Canton 25, Jonathan Smith and Hicks combined for the play of the game. Smith burst into the backfield, forcing a fumble with a hard tackle, and Hicks scooped up the loose ball before sprinting 75 yards for a touchdown, giving the Bears a 12–0 advantage and a surge of momentum.
Canton wasn’t done. After forcing another Potsdam punt, Krepel took the first play of the next drive 65 yards racing up the left sideline for his second touchdown of the day. Owen Buffham added the PAT to make it 20–0.
Canton’s defense closed out the game in dominant fashion. Buffham, Zuhlsdorf, and Jacobs each recorded two tackles in the final quarter, while Buchardt, Krepel, Clifford, Mak Brassard, Reynolds, and Gaige Timm all contributed to preserve the shutout.

The Bears’ 20–0 victory capped off a perfect 7–0 season in which they outscored opponents 225–38.
Canton’s offense was a powerhouse, totaling 2,135 rushing yards and 2,459 yards of total yards, with 27 combined rushing touchdowns and four passing scores. The defense added two touchdowns of its own for 33 total team scores.
Defensively, the Bears were outstanding all year, recording six interceptions, 13 forced fumbles, and 11 recoveries while winning the turnover battle 17–6. The unit also produced 18 sacks and 34 tackles for loss.
It was a complete team effort from start to finish — a fitting conclusion to an undefeated campaign for a Canton squad that excelled in every phase of the game.
