Under the direction of Head Coach Kim French, the Canton JV Girls Soccer Team wrapped up an outstanding season, finishing second in the Central Division behind undefeated Gouverneur. The Golden Bears proved to be one of the most disciplined, dynamic, and resilient teams in the league, ending the season with a record of 11-4-1. Canton opened the season against eventual champions Gouverneur, coached by French’s cousin Shawn Typhair. In that early matchup, Canton controlled much of the play despite falling 1–0. Typhair himself praised the Bears, acknowledging that his team had been outplayed — an early testament to the talent and drive of this Canton squad.

A Season of Leadership and Growth

Leading the way in goal was sophomore and captain Emma Bradish-Hayes, who recorded 138 saves throughout the season. Known for her “signature” hustle out of the net to challenge attacking players, Emma’s fearless speed and quick decision-making often turned dangerous plays into momentum shifts for Canton.

At sweeper, 8th grader Bailey Bushaw was a standout. Despite her youth, Bushaw played with intelligence and command, directing the defense, calling plays, and maintaining the team’s shape in the defensive diamond. Her instincts and communication made her a critical piece of Canton’s back line.

Supporting her were three freshman fullbacks — Mary Abuhassan, Ella Bradish-Hayes, and Hallee Bullock — who brought grit, skill, and patience to the defensive unit. Ella and Hallee excelled at man-marking, while Mary’s versatility allowed her to contribute offensively, scoring and assisting when moved up to wing.

Freshman captain Mary Sergi, playing stopper, provided energy and strength in the midfield, pushing the ball upfield effectively and scoring three goals — including one during a varsity call-up.In the center, sophomore and captain Ashley Aldous emerged as one of the team’s MVPs. Her precision passing, confident dribbling, and leadership on set plays drove Canton’s offense. Aldous tallied five goals and was instrumental in creating opportunities for teammates.

Midfield Power and Versatility

The midfield was bolstered by young but fearless 8th graders Eva Brown and Robin Rhodes, both of whom grew tremendously this season. Brown’s aggression and voice on the field helped set the tone, earning her two goals. Rhodes, originally on defense, transitioned to midfield and flourished — even pulling off a “spin move” perfected in practice. Her adaptability and two-way play impressed both coaches and teammates.

Sophomore Mattie Carlin balanced school, work, and soccer while bringing consistent positivity and skill to the midfield. Sophomore Sola Oakley joined later in the season and quickly made an impact, scoring on a solo run in the final game.

Up top, sophomore forward Kaydence Locke displayed notable growth in grit and confidence, adding two goals to the season tally. Freshman Aeva Richard, one of the team’s most versatile athletes, could be found anywhere on the field — defense, midfield, or forward — wherever her coach needed her. Her aggression, awareness, and reliable play earned her three goals.

Freshman Parker Gallagher impressed as a starting wing, known for her perseverance and smart positioning, contributing two goals. Fellow forwards Rori Ballard, Savannah Shaw, and Zybeth Williams provided speed and enthusiasm, showing strong potential as future team leaders.At striker, 8th grader Gigi Sergi dominated offensively for the second straight year, finishing as the team’s leading scorer with 20 goals. Her ability to read the field, create chances, and share the ball with teammates made her one of the most dynamic players in the division.
