On Saturday, September 6th, the Canton varsity cross country team competed in their first meet of the season at the Cadyville Rec Park. This year’s team is small and young, but is quickly showing immense potential. The team’s spirit is strong, despite losing many talented athletes who graduated last June.
This year’s Spartan Running Festival included teams from Saranac, Lake Placid, Norwood-Norfolk, Potsdam, Peru, Massena, Ausable Valley, and Plattsburgh.
True to cross country season, racing conditions were chilly and rainy, but the weather did not dampen the enthusiasm on the course. For a few Canton athletes, the invitational was their debut race.
In the boys race, sophomore Zachary Lyndacker placed 16th with a time of 18:22. Duncan Harper completed the race in 19:35. Cedric Harper ran a 20:30. Carson White ran the race in 20:56. Parker Smith completed the race in 21:11. Elijah Williams ran the race in 21:38.

Lena Frank was Canton’s top girl finisher, placing 29th with a time of 23:29. JessieJean Coffin ran the course in 24:57. Addison Ragan completed the race in 25:58. Ashlan Foster ran the race in 26:05. Elizabeth Metcalf finished the race in 31:50.
The athletes were pleased with their times and look forward to increasing speed and endurance throughout the rest of the season. The next meet will take place on September 16th at Potsdam High School.
