In what may go down as the soggiest spring on record, the JV girls softball team wrapped up their final two games of the season during the week of May 26. Coach Carla Wentworth however would not let the rain dampen her outlook on the future for these Golden Bears. “We showed great improvement over the season and supported each other throughout the year. The team finished with a season record of 6-6 with many wins coming in the second half of the season. The season is a clear indication of a bright future for many individual players and for the entire Canton Softball program.”
On Wednesday May 28, the team traveled to Massena to restart a rain delayed contest from May 6. While the bears had jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, the break did not help the bears as they lost the contest 23-15 in six innings. As has been the case all season, the JV sluggers showed power at the plate with Harper Elvy, Makayla Hogan and Neveah Halpin all going 3 for 4 at the plate, including three triples from Halpin (2) and Hogan (1), while Harlie Larsen added a triple of her own in top half of the 5th inning. However, the Massena bats came out on top in the slugfest with multiple players hitting for extra bases in the contest.
Friday May 30 marked the end of the season for the JV bears. In the final home contest, they lost 4-12 to a strong SLC team. The bears pitching struggled early, giving up 12 runs in 3 innings before Lily Todd took the circle pitching 4 innings of shut-out relief (10 strikeouts, 3 walks and 1 hit). At the plate, Elvy reached base twice on 2 singles from the lead off spot, but the bears were unable to generate much offense behind her.
