Junior righty Zadok Roiger went the distance, allowing just one run on three hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks, but the Canton offense was unable to provide any run support as the Golden Bears’ baseball team fell to Ogdensburg Free Academy 1-0 at the Ike Noble Field complex on Monday afternoon.
Roiger needed just 72 pitches (60 strikes, 12 balls) in the complete game effort, with the lone OFA run coming in the top of the seventh.
Lucca LaBella reached on a bloop single to left field with one out, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, then scored the game’s only run on a double to left center by Nicholi Ramsdell.
Roiger was locked in from the opening pitch, retiring the first nine batters he faced. Then, after allowing a leadoff single in the top of the fourth inning, he retired the next seven OFA hitters.
LaBella allowed just one hit in five innings of work for the Blue Devils, striking out five and walking three. Madden West earned the win, allowing just one base runner (Roiger, who was hit by a pitch with two outs in the sixth) over the final two innings.
Jackson Ames smoked a double that bounced just shy of the centerfield wall to lead the Golden Bears’ offense.
Canton had its best opportunity to score in the fourth inning when Charlie Todd reached on a one-out walk, then advanced from first to third on a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt by J.J. Ahlfeld. LaBella, however, got out of the inning unscathed, inducing a fly ball to center for the third out of the inning.
OFA improved to 2-0 overall and in NAC Central play, while the Bears fell to 1-1. Canton is scheduled to play Potsdam this week before taking a week off for Spring Break.
