Girls Varsity Lacrosse Continues to Overpower Opponents in Three More Wins

The girls varsity lacrosse team posted two more dominant wins over the past week, dispatching both Plattsburgh and Franklin Academy on their way to an undefeated record through five games.

Wednesday, April 9 – Canton 16, Saranac/Lake Placid 4

The girls hosted the merger team from the Adirondacks in another display of offensive force, led by the Bears’ usual suspects.

Canton jumped out to an early lead, outscoring SLP 5-0 in the first quarter. SLP responded in the second quarter, outscoring the Bears 2-1 to bring the halftime score to 6-2. Motivated by the push from SLP, the Bears laid it on thick in the third quarter, doubling their lead, before adding four more in the fourth quarter to put a sizable distance between themselves and their opponents.

Senior midfielder Vivian Coburn again led the way for the Bears on the score sheet. She tallied five goals on five shots, added five assists, and won four draw controls. Junior Midfielder Olivia Francey matched Coburn’s five goals while adding two draw controls, and junior midfielder Saige Blevins chipped in four goals and an assist with three draw controls.

Sophomore attacker Madie Ayrassian scored a goal and recorded an assist, senior attacker Ella Mousaw added a goal, and sophomore attacker Elena Abplanalp had an assist.

Sophomore goaltender Zayda-Ann Gaurin made two stops in the contest.

Bears Head Coach Murphy Liggio said this was a big win for her squad.

“They beat us once last year and we knew they’d be a strong team this year,” Liggio said.

Saturday, April 12 – Canton 15, Plattsburgh 2

A weekend trip to Plattsburgh saw the Bears make quick work of their farthest flung foe in Section X.

Canton got off to a hot start, outscoring Plattsburgh 4-2 in the first quarter and 5-0 in the second. The Bears added six more in the second half as the scoring was evenly distributed in this Saturday morning contest as Coburn was unavailable.

Blevins led the way again for the Bears, with five goals and an assist, along with four draw controls. Francey followed up with three goals and an assist, adding five draw controls.

Ayrassian tallied three goals for the Bears, while Abplanalp scored two. Senior midfielder Sara Aldous and eighth grade midfielder Mamie Coburn both scored once. Eighth grader Delia Gaurin midfielder and sophomore attacker Nina Lesperance both registered a shot on net.

Canton’s Coach Liggio remarked that Mousaw was a major factor in the game, riding Plattsburgh’s breakout and creating turnovers.

Monday, April 14 – Canton 19, Franklin Academy 1

Another lengthy road trip East resulted in yet another crushing victory for the Bears in Malone. Scoring was again led by Canton’s big names, but there was plenty to go around.

Blevins and Francey both scored four goals. Blevins added three assists and three draw controls, while Francey notched a solo assist and five draw controls. The Coburn sisters each tallied three goals, while Vivian assisted on three more and won four draws. Mamie also won two draws.

Ayrassian scored twice in the contest, while sophomore attacker Claire Polniak scored once, as did eighth grade attacker Mary Sergi, and Abplanalp. Mousaw added two assists, while Lesperance, Aldous and freshman midfielder Amal Moumen both registers a single helper. Aldous alsowon three draws, while Moumen won one.

Gaurin, the sophomore goaltender, tallied a pair of saves in the contest.
