As the new winter sport season begins, the Canton indoor track and field team looks forward to another season of talent, accomplishments, and connection. This year, between incoming freshmen and departing seniors, many of Canton’s athletes are excited to work toward new goals, and for some, make this season their best yet.
This season’s team is composed of 52 members, all with diverse abilities and experience levels. Canton athletes will represent across events at the weekly meets held at SLU. The team is comprised of a balanced ratio of distance runners, sprinters, and athletes competing in field events.
With so many seniors present, much of the team is focused on new personal records, and above all, a memorable season. Senior Rylan Lee-Powell is striving toward records for himself and his teammates.
“I’m shooting for sub-10 minutes in the 3200,” he said.
Additionally, with his teammates, he hopes to break a school record and qualify nationally in the 4×800 meter relay. Lee-Powell emphasized that in the sport of track and field, there will always be new chances to meet goals.
Aside from event-focused goals, the team also looks forward to the bonding and overall positive environment that comes from being on the track and field team.
“Track and field is a great sport because no matter how you do, you have a crowd and a pile of teammates to support you,” Senior Violet Foster said.
Senior Kaden Worthley states that track and field is a great sport because of the “incredible relationships we can form with our team and the running community as a whole.”
Worthley added that his overall goal at practices and meets alike is to leave everything he has out on the track.
The commitment and work ethic of Canton’s track and field athletes lead to personal bests and record-breaking results.
“The achievements that arise come from your work,” Senior Aiden Rodriguez-Doyle said.
“In the short time I have been involved in the running community, it has become clear to me through the dedication of older runners, particularly the seniors, that the commitment of track and field athletes ultimately leads to success,” added a freshman athlete.
Coaches Bryan Huntley, Shannon Shannon, Kristopher Boettcher, and Deb Lyndaker are looking forward to being able to work with new and returning athletes to help them reach their fullest potential.
The first meet will take place at St. Lawrence University’s Newell Fieldhouse at 6 p.m. on Dec. 6 against various teams in the section. The members of the track and field team are anxious for the season to get into full swing!
